Sporting Fields and Skate Parks

Great Lakes offers a wide range of recreational facilities such as skateparks and sporting fields.  All our recreational facilities are now smoke free.  This means you cannot smoke within 10m of sports buildings, courts and playing fields, park furniture and park buildings.  Please refer to the Policy Smoke Free Recreation Areas for more information.

Skate Parks

A skate park is a purpose-built recreational environment for skateboarders, roller skaters, inline skaters, scooter riders and BMX riders to ride and develop their technique. A skatepark may contain half pipes, quarter pipes, spine transfers, handrails, banked ramps, full pipes, pools, bowls, and any number of other objects.  Skate Parks are designed specifically to provide unique challenges to its users.  In a well designed park a skater can pump around the parks curved walls such as quarter pipes, pump bumps and bowl corners without taking their feet off to push. They can use that speed to hit street obstacles such as stairs, railings and benches.

If you are into skating, we have a range of skate parks for you. There are currently 7 skateparks offering users a range of activities and are suitable the most beginner to the more advanced rider.

Skate parks range from beginner parks at Tea Gardens, Bulahdelah, StroudNabiac , Pindimar  and Green Point through to the more challenging parks at Smiths Lake and Tuncurry.

How do I find out if a sporting field is open for use?

Council has a responsibility to ensure all sporting fields are maintained to a standard that will hold up to expected use during the course of the playing season.  At times during inclement weather we have to close the fields to ensure they are in the best playing conditions for the remainder of the season.  Fields can also be closed for maintenance.

The decision to close a field is not taken lightly.  The responsible officer takes into consideration the soil structure, drainage, how far into the season we are, and how the field will stand up under play if they are to remain open.  All sporting clubs are considered at the time of closure, however Council cannot be held responsible for any loss of competition or training days.

Council offers a Sports Field Status Page as well as a Sports Field Hotline with a recorded message that will advise which fields are closed. The HOTLINE NUMBER IS 02 6555 9200.

How do I make a booking for a sporting field? There are numerous sporting fields throughout the area.  Seasonal or casual bookings to use these fields can be made through Parks and Recreation Services.  To book a field, complete the Sporting Field Booking Form.pdf
