Beach Watch Bulletin

Great Lakes Council is currently testing recreational swimming waters.

The testing program is conducted with the assistance of the New South Wales Government through the NSW Coastal Protection Package.

Testing program uses the compliance testing method.

The compliance-testing program tests water quality in accordance with the requirements of the National Health and Medical Research Council guidelines. The guidelines require 5 samples to be tested each month after which the locations either pass or fail the guidelines.
No: Location Testing Program Results
1 Tuncurry Rock Pool Compliance Pass
2 Forster Main Beach Compliance Pass
3 Forster Beach Baths Compliance Pass
5 Little Street Forster Baths Compliance Pass

The important point to consider prior to swimming in natural systems is that these sites will be affected by stormwater pollution and at times algal blooms.
Therefore, users of these sites need to be aware of the changing conditions and not swim when there is reasonable doubt as to the water quality.

Note:  The weather was again variable with heavy rainfall resulting is some flooding of the Wallis Lake catchment. The major impact following rain was coloured water during runout tides. Although the water quality tests results were good it is still not recommended to swimming following heavy rainfall when water quality has obviously changed.

The Beachwatch program has now finished for this swimming season. The program will recommence in September 2005.
