Litter is waste material that is not properly disposed of , which can be harmful to the the environment and for human health. The Protection of the environment Operations Act 1997 has recently been amended to allow for stronger but more flexible and enforceable anti litter provisions

Throwing a lit cigarette butt out the car window or on the ground could cost you between $200 and $375!

And leaving stubbed out butts on the ground could cost you $60!
Lolly wrappers, ATM Slips, etc that are thrown on the ground could cost you $60!

To litter aggressively e.g. to smash a drink bottle on the road, could cost you $375!
Littering any item from a vehicle or general littering e.g. fast food containers, could cost you $200!

Great Lakes Council Officers are now enforcing the New Litter Laws in our area. For October/November 2000 They will be Specifically Targeting the litter that results from unsecured/uncovered loads en route to the Tip, food wrappers and cigarette butts thrown from cars and stubbed out cigarette butts in parks and on the streets.
