Forster School of Arts was built in 1878 and has played host to many different functions and uses by the community throughout the years.

Strict 'Restricted Use Conditions' now apply to the building whilst plan development for the Town Civic Precinct (encompassing the School of Arts, Visitors Information Centre, Neighbourhood Centre and CWA sites, plus reserve land between Little and Middle Streets and the old public school site on the corner of Lake, West and Middle Streets) are developed.

These "Restricted Use Guidelines" have been formulated to ensure public safety and include:

• No use of the stage area.
• Any point loads, eg stacked boxes, are not to exceed 150 kg.
• Number of people in the room is limited to 40 at any one time.
• Weddings and parties are not permitted.
