Established in 1870, seven years after the first white settlers came to the area, Forster Cemetery was officially dedicated on 7 April 1894.
Forster Cemetery is heavily treed with mature eucalypts and occupies 4 hectares (10 acres) on Strand Street, Forster. Situated on a north facing slope, its graves are laid out in an east facing orientation.

Columbarium
Forster Columbarium is for the placement of ashes into a wall setting. Ashes are interred into the niche receptacle and a memorial plaque is placed securely over the niche. Plaques are available in a range of materials and are included in the purchase price.
Memorial plaques can be also be placed, in instances where the ashes have been interred or scattered elsewhere.

General
The General or Monumental section of Forster Cemetery caters for burials with traditional style monuments. Great Lakes Council only permits single depth burials in its cemeteries. Ashes are permitted to be interred into burial plots.
There are several denominational and one inter-denominational area available. These comprise:
- Aboriginal;
- Catholic;
- Church of England;
- General-Interdenominational;
- Independent Wesleyan;
- Presbyterian sections.
Monuments are arranged by the applicant and are not included in Council's services. Contact should be made with a Monumental Stonemason.

Granite Columbarium
The 'Rememberance Wall A" Granite Columbarium is for the placement of ashes into a granite wall setting. Ashes are interred into the niche receptacle and a memorial plaque is placed securely over the niche. Plaques are available in bronze with a small side vase and are included in the purchase price.
Memorial plaques can also be placed, in instances where the ashes have been interred or scattered elsewhere.
This wall also has spaces for Memorial Only plaques ie: there is no niche provided for interment of ashes, only space for a memorial plaque.

Memorial Ashes Gardens
Forster Memorial Ashes Gardens area has a peaceful, gentle atmosphere and is identified by several areas of beautiful native garden beds.
Ashes are interred into the allotment and a memorial plaque is securely placed above the ashes at ground level. Plaques are available in granite or bronze and are included in the purchase price.

Forster Magnolia Ashes Garden is a new, boutique ashes garden with a peaceful atmosphere. Identified by a cream block surround, and two 'Little Gem' Magnolias as the feature shrubs, it is located adjacent to the beautiful bushland garden and nearby to the columbarium wall.
