Naming and signposting of roads is important to ensure that properties can be located, particularly in emergency situations.
Roads can be named on the initiative of Council or upon application from a member of the public. You are required to apply to Council for approval to name any of the following road types.
Road Types
If you are unsure of the type of road you are seeking to name please contact Council prior to making application, however generally:
Existing Public Roads
A public street/road is one that is owned and maintained by Council.
Newly Constructed Roads
New roads are usually constructed as part of a new subdivision. The developer must undertake application to Council to approve the new road names prior to the submission of subdivision plans to Council for approval.
Private Roads
Private roads are roads that are not owned or maintained by Council or the Department of Lands.
Existing Public Roads and Private Roads
To apply to have an existing public road or private road named, complete an Application to Name Existing Road and forward it to Council along with a locality plan and description indicating the location of the road.
Newly Constructed Roads
To apply to have a newly constructed road name approved, complete a New Road Name/s Application form and return it to Council at least 28 days prior to the lodgement of your final subdivision plans for assessment by Council.
Proposed Road Name Requirements
Proposed road names must comply with Council's Street/Road Naming Policy or they will not be considered by Council for approval.
All applicants must provide three (3) road name suggestions and state reasons to support the requested name for each suggestion (the history of the name(s) proposed should be included).
Each proposed road name is to be a maximum of 9 characters (excluding the suffix) and it should be noted that Council will exclude any road name that already exists within the Great Lakes Council area, please contact Council if you are unsure whether your proposed road name already exists.

Public Roads
The suggested road names will be considered by Council. The first appropriate suggested street/road name, that is not duplicated on Council's Road Name Register, will be advertised in the local newspaper for public comment. Members of the public are generally given a period of 2 weeks to submit objections to the proposed new street/road name.
Objections submitted by members of the public will be assessed by Council. If any objections are found to be valid and the proposed street/road name is rejected, the next appropriate street/road name suggested by the applicant will be proposed.
If no objections are raised, or the objections raised are deemed invalid, the approved new street/road name will be advertised in the NSW Government Gazette and added to Council's Road Name Register.
Maps and any associated property addresses will then be updated to reflect the new street/road name and relevant services and authorities will be notified accordingly.
Private Roads
Your suggested road names will be considered by Council and you will be advised of the outcome. The first appropriate suggested road name, that is not duplicated on Council's Road Name Register will be approved by Council. Unlike public roads, the naming of private roads does not require advertising.Once an agreement has been achieved between the owner/s and Council, a road name sign can be installed. Council will record the private road name on its systems and allocate property addresses to the new road name where appropriate.

Existing Public Roads
The fees associated with the advertising and sign posting of an existing public road will be borne by Council.
Newly Constructed Roads
The fees associated with the advertising and sign posting of a newly constructed road will be borne by the developer.
Private Roads
As private road names do not require advertising, no advertising costs are incurred. However the owner/s of the private road being named will be responsible for the costs associated with the installation of a road name sign.
