Great Lakes Council's internal structure is divided between three Divisions: Corporate & Community Services; Engineering Services and Planning & Environmental Services. Council employs approximately 350 staff.

Councillors

Local Government elections are usually held every four years. It is compulsory for all residents within the Council area to vote if their names appear on the electoral roll. Non-resident property owners may vote if they make application for their names to be included on a non-residential roll.

Council consists of nine Councillors who represent the entire Local Govenrment area, with the last election held on 13 September 2008. The Mayor and Deputy Mayor are nominated and elected annually by their fellow Councillors during the September Council meeting. Councillors are always happy to hear from members of the community about issues of interest and concern.

Clr McWilliams was first elected to Council in September 1995. She has been re-elected at Ordinary elections held in September 1999, March 2004 and in September 2008 which will be her fourth term as a Councillor. She was elected as Deputy Mayor in September 2002, a position she held continuously to the end of the last Council in September 2008. Clr McWilliams was elected as Mayor on 30 September 2008.

Personal Details: Clr McWilliams has lived in the Great Lakes area for over 20 years. She has two daughters and four grandchildren and has previously worked as an administrator.

Clr Stephens was first elected to Council in March 2004 and was re-elected for his second term in September 2008.  He was elected to the position of Deputy Mayor in September 2011.

Personal Details: Clr Stephens is married to Margaret, has seven children and 16 grandchildren. He has a career in marketing/advertising, catering, real estate and printing.

Clr Gill was first elected to Council in September 1991 and has been re-elected at Ordinary elections held in September 1995, September 1999, March 2004 and September 2008 which will be her fifth term as a Councillor. Clr Gill is now the longest serving female on Great Lakes Council and also has become the first female Chair of Midcoast Water.

Personal Details: Clr Gill is married to Greg and has lived in the area for 23 years. She is a horticulture and bush regeneration consultant along with being an environmental and public interest advocate and campaigner. Clr Gill has a real passion for the environment and community and works diligently for both.

Councillor Karen Hutchinson

Clr Hutchinson was first elected to Council in March 2004 and was re-elected to her second term in September 2008.

Personal Details: Clr Hutchinson is married to Paul, has two adult children and four grandchildren. Clr Hutchinson was born in Sydney and moved to Booral on a 1,000 acre cattle and chicken farm nine years ago.

Clr McCaskie was first elected to Council in March 2004 and was re-elected to her second term in September 2008.

Personal Details: Clr McCaskie has lived in the Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest area for 11 years. She is involved as a Lawyer in a number of tribunals, with a background in social justice issues.

Clr Roberts first served on Council from July 2000 until 2002. He was re-elected to Council in March 2004 and again for his third term in September 2008.

Personal Details: Clr Roberts has extensive experience in Local Government, having served 10 years on Blacktown Council and the Local Government Appeals Tribunal from 1977 until its inception into the Land and Environment Court. He is married to Sue with four adult children and lives on the family farm/eucalypt plantation at Tea Gardens. Clr Roberts is a former local School Teacher and now a consulting Archaeologist. He is also active in many community organisations including Surf Lifesaving, the Baptist Church, National Party and Historical Society.

Personal Details:  Councillor Tuffy was first elected to Local Government in 1999.  Councillor Tuffy was re-elected in 2004 and for a third term in 2008 as an Independent councillor.  Councillor Tuffy is married to Christina together they have two adult children and four grandchildren.  Mike and his wife have lived at Failford for twenty five years.  Mike is a businessman and operates a celebrity international sports and entertainment multimedia and theatrical agency.

Councillor Leigh Vaughan

Clr Vaughan was first elected to Council in March 2004 and was re-elected to her second term in September 2008. She was elected to the State Executive of the Local Government Association in 2008, and was recently re-elected. She is a member of the LGSA Social Policy Committee, the Conference Planning Committee and is Chair of the Women's Committee. She also chairs the Hunter Council's Community and Cultural Development Advisory Committee.

Personal Details: Clr Vaughan is committed to the right of all people to live in a safe, clean, creative environment. A background in education and performing arts has fuelled a passion for lifelong learning accessible for all and she is involved in many community organisations. Clr Vaughan founded and chairs Great Lakes Arts Network. She is founding Chair of Conservatorium Mid North Coast, has been Vice Chair of the Board of Arts MNC for some years and is founding Director of Company of Voices. As founding Chair of community orchestra Sinfonia Mid North Coast, she was the recipient of the 2006 National Award from Orchestras Australia, recognising her contribution to community cultural development. She has also been an owner builder and been involved in small business. Leigh is married to John and they have lived in Forster for 35 years, where they raised three daughters.

Clr Weate was first elected to Council in September 1991, has been re-elected at Ordinary elections held in September 1995, September 1999, March 2004 and September 2008 which will be his fifth term as a Councillor. He has served as Deputy Mayor from September 1994 - September 1996, from September 1997 -September 1998 and from September 2008 - September 2011.

Personal Details:  Cr Weate has lived at Darawank, Tuncurry for 32 years, where he and Deborah raised four children.  He is employed as manager of Great Lakes Community Resources.
