Community Facilities

Cemetery services – council operates six public cemeteries, these are located at Tuncurry, Forster, Bulahdelah, Stroud, Tea Gardens and Coolongolook. Cemetery services produce an income to council of close to $100,000 per annum; these monies are used to further develop the facilities.
Provision and maintenance of public buildings. The Community Services Branch is responsible for 48 public buildings; these include public halls, historic buildings, museums, arts and crafts buildings, CWA halls, doctor’s surgeries and community centres.

HACC Services – Council received funding from the Department of Ageing Disability and Home Care services to auspice a number of services to support a target group of people who are frail, aged, or disabled, who are having difficulty remaining in their own home. The services provide support to these people, and assist them in many of their everyday needs. The services are often strongly volunteer-based, and the work of volunteers is integral to the ongoing success of the programs.

Great Lakes Community Options Project – supports a 40-client caseload, arranging services to keep clients in their own homes and avoiding premature institutionalisation.
Great Lakes Neighbour Aid and Hawks Nest Tea Gardens Neighbour Aid – are community support programs for frail aged people, younger people with disabilities, and the carers of both. Services include social support through assistance with shopping, companionship, individual transport needs and daily security calls. Great Lakes Neighbour Aid also operate a carer support group and a visually impaired support group.
Great Lakes Leisure and Respite Options is a respite program that supports younger people with disability living in the rurally remote areas of the Great Lakes Local Government Area. Young people with disabilities are able to engage in recreational activities of their choice, through the support of volunteers, whilst the parents/carers of the young people receive a period of respite.

Great Lakes Council Social Plan - this document details the demographics of our area, identifies community needs, and provides strategies for the provision of services and facilities over a four-year period and beyond.
Community Planning – Liaison with State and Federal departments re service needs for this region.

Other Services

After school care – provision of childcare from 3.00pm to 6.00pm on weekdays during school terms. The service is based at Tuncurry Public School. For enquiries please call 0417 299 617.
